Aboubakar's other great passion after indigo is the ancient Malian technique of mineral mud-dye, or Bogolanfini. This colour and light-fast process uses a naturally occurring tannin as a mordant which helps to fix the iron in the mud to the textile being dyed. It is a lovely, very tactile process, which can be used in a painterly fashion. Aboubakar uses it extensively in his work, drawing on his background as a professional calligrapher and graphic designer, to produce precise calligraphic imagery on cloth. Mud-dye can also be combined with indigo to produce stunning results, including deep and rich permanent blacks.

This three-day-long workshop will introduce participants to the principles of mineral mud-dyeing. They will be shown how to prepare the mordant and the mud as well as the textile to be dyed, and how to apply and fix the colour. This process lends itself beautifully to drawn or painted designs and so is a marvellous design technique for naturally-dyed patterning of textiles. After participants have become familiar with the principles and have experimented with samples, they will then work on a large project with Aboubakar's assistance.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be familiar with the techniques of this dye, and will have a small project that they will have completed during the workshop.
Aboubakar will be bringing out some organic handspun and handwoven Malian cotton which will be purchasable by the metre should you wish to use this for your final project. The dyestuffs used will be supplied. Clothing and other things to bring will be addressed in an email sent out to confirmed participants.

The maximum number of participants for this workshop is 10 people, and we require a minimum number of 7 participants to ensure that the workshop goes ahead. Places are non-refundable, as we rely on getting the numbers in order to go ahead with the workshop. However you can gift your place to someone if you are not able to attend, and in the event that we have requests beyond the number of participants we can handle, we will let you know of the possibility to offer a refund if you have contacted us to tell us you will not be attending. Atelier de teinture de boue minérale de trois jours - 29-31 août 2022

L'autre grande passion d'Aboubakar après l'indigo est la technique malienne ancestrale de teinture à la boue minérale, ou Bogolanfini. Ce processus utilise un tanin naturel comme mordant qui aide à fixer le fer contenu dans la boue au textile à teindre. C'est un processus agréable et très tactile, surtout si vous aimez la boue, et il peut être combiné avec de l'indigo pour produire des résultats époustouflants.

Cet atelier de trois jours présentera aux participants les principes de la teinture à la boue minérale. On leur montrera comment préparer le mordant et la boue ainsi que le textile à teindre, et comment appliquer et fixer la couleur. Aboubakar utilise très souvent cette technique avec des dessins très calligraphiques, et elle se prête magnifiquement aux motifs dessinés ou peints. Une fois que les participants se sont familiarisés avec les principes et ont expérimenté cette technique sur des échantillons, ils travailleront ensuite sur un grand projet avec l'aide d'Aboubakar.

À la fin de cet atelier, les participants se seront familiarisés avec les techniques de cette teinture, et auront un petit projet qu'ils auront réalisé durant l'atelier.
Aboubakar proposera du coton malien biologique filé et tissé à la main qui pourra être acheté au mètre si vous souhaitez l'utiliser pour votre projet final. Les colorants utilisés pendant l’atelier seront fournis. Les vêtements et autres choses à apporter seront adressés dans un e-mail envoyé aux participants confirmés.

Le nombre maximum de participants pour cet atelier est de 10 personnes, et nous avons besoin d'un nombre minimum de 7 participants pour assurer le bon déroulement de l'atelier.

Les places ne sont pas remboursables, car nous comptons sur un nombre de participants minimum pour rendre l'atelier viable.
